Special Rapporteur on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography to visit Ukraine

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, Juan Miguel Petit, will visit Ukraine from 22 to 28 October 2006.

During the visit, Mr. Petit will focus on trafficking of children for prostitution, labour and other purposes. The Special Rapporteur is scheduled to visit the capital city Kiev and surrounding areas. He will meet with Government officials, representatives of the judiciary, parliamentarians, representatives of non-governmental organizations, United Nations officials and individuals dealing with issues related to his mandate. The Special Rapporteur will present a report on the mission to the fourth session of the Human Rights Council in March 2007.

Mr. Petit, journalist and social scientist from Uruguay, was appointed Special Rapporteur in July 2001 by the Commission on Human Rights, the Council's predecessor. Since then, he has carried out field visits to South Africa, France, Brazil, Paraguay, Romania, Albania and Greece.
