SPECIAL PROCEDURES: Applications for vacancies

Summary: The UN have called for applications for Special Procedure mandate-holder vacancies. The positions are due to be filled during the 18th session of the Human Rights Council.

Special Procedure Vacancies

Seven vacancies will be filled during the 18th session of the Human Rights Council, which is scheduled to take place in september this year.

    Two new mandates

    • Independent Expert for the situation of human rights in Cote d'Ivoire

    During the 17th session, the Council decided to establish the mandate of Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Côte d’Ivoire for a period of one year. The Expert would be responsible for assisting the Government of Côte d’Ivoire in the follow-up to the implementation of the recommendations of the International Commission of Inquiry and of the resolutions of the Human Rights Council.

      • Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises.

      On 16 June, the Human Rights Council endorsed a new set of Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights designed to provide - for the first time - a global standard for preventing and addressing the risk of adverse impacts on human rights linked to business activity.

        On endorsing the Guiding Principles, the Council decided to establish a Working Group, which will consist of five independent experts with a balanced geographical representation. The experts will take on the role for a period of three years.

        Extension of existing mandate

        • Working Group  on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the rights of peoples to self-determination.

        Deadlines

        A Consultative Group will propose a list of candidates for the above positions to the President of the Human Rights Council one month prior to the 18th session (12 - 30 September).
