SPAIN: Children must help with housework under proposed new law

[29 April 2014] -

Children may soon be legally obliged to help with housework in Spain.

Imagine being able to tell your children' clean your room now - it's the law!'

Under the new rules all children under the age of 18 living at home will have to share responsibility with their parents for:

Caring for the home and performing household tasks in accordance with their age and regardless of their gender.

The bill currently going through the Spanish parliament will also require children to 'participate in family life,' and be respectful of their parents and siblings.

And it's not just at home that Spanish children will be legally expected to behave - they will also need to respect their school teachers and have a 'positive attitude towards learning.'

However, responsibility for devising punishments for disobedient children will still lie with parents not the state, as according to local news sources, the bill doesn't recommend penalties for children who break the new law. So pretty pointless, really?

The measure is part of a wider Child Protection Bill, a draft of which was approved in the Spanish Parliament on Friday.

Since 2005, married Spanish men who refuse to do their share of the housework have also faced legal sanctions.
