Somalia: At least three children injured in attacks

[Mogadishu 18 March 2007] - More than 25 people, including at least three children, were wounded and 15 killed after gunmen fired a barrage of mortars at Mogadishu international seaport and nearby neighbourhoods in Somalia.

Several mortars hit inside the port, injuring three employees, while witnesses said a huge cargo ship docked at the port had also been targeted.

Hamar Jajab, Wardhigley District, Yaqshid, and Huriwa neighbourhoods were also affected by the violence.

Four people, three of them children, were wounded when two mortars exploded inside Hamar Jajab market, and at least eight other people were wounded when mortars landed near the former Somalia Transportation Centre in north Mogadishu.

A high-level UN team has been working in Baido, 245 km south of Mogadishu. Led by Tuliameni Kalomo, assistant to the UN secretary general, the team arrived in Baidoa, a base for the Somali transitional government, on Sunday.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.
