Somali Child Protection and Development (SOCPD) organized a three-day workshop (7th-9th August 2007) on Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Mogadishu. The workshop was held at SOCPD centre and 20 members from local NGOs attended. The following topics were covered at the workshop: causes and effects of GBV, experiences of GBV survivors, sensitivity and confidentiality of information from survivors, psychosocial needs referral and advocacy in this regard. Gender Based Violence (GBV) predominately occurs in marginalized communities living in IDP settings. Perpetrators from outside the camps frequently target and sexually assault girls and women from these vulnerable communities since protection levels are very low. Rape cases are under reported because of shame. Moreover, there are very few services available to support the victims. During the workshop, it was highlighted that when GBV occurs, immediate action is required. The role of local NGO in this regard was discussed and agreed to break the silence and help the marginalized communities suffering in IDP camps. It was decided that emphasis should be given to highlighting the roles and responsibilities of people working and living in IDP camps to ensure an increase in the protection levels in an attempt to reduce the number of GBV cases. SOCPD organized this workshop to build the capacity of local NGO, to increase understanding about GBV and to address the protection concerns of marginalized communities in IDP settings. The workshop was concluded successfully and was facilitated by SOCPD chairperson Mohamed Abdi Mohamed.
