Save the Children Alliance's key messages at the XVI International AIDS Conference

Save the Children Alliance is urging donors and governments to address blockages facing children affected by HIV and AIDS in accessing prevention, treatment, care and support. These are their key messages:

Make the money work for children
The effect of AIDS on the lives of millions of children is devastating. Tackling this pandemic requires both firm donor and government commitment and dedicated and consistent resources.

Address bottlenecks
To maximise benefits for children, donors must use quicker systems for disbursing funds, use existing networks to reach children quickly, and support local intermediary bodies to provide small grants.

Meet the targets
Donors must fulfil funding pledges they have made to meet the needs of children affected by HIV and AIDS. They must be able to demonstrate their performance on these commitments with statistical reporting, including data by age and gender.

Programmes supported by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) must have a demonstrated benefit to children affected by HIV, Malaria and TB in alignment with the development of national health systems.

Protect children’s rights to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support
Provide young people with comprehensive prevention methods including interventions which target higher risk youth.

Invest more in strengthening health systems: this is essential to find, diagnose, and treat children with HIV and AIDS more quickly.

Establish social protection systems that balance the provision of basic services with investment in community capacity to care for and protect children.
