Public Debates on Child Labour Held in Central and NEP

Summary: KAACR in collaboration with the Department of Children Services and the Provincial Child Rights Network in Central, Nyanza and North Eastern Provinces organised Public Debates on the Children Act with the theme "Protection of Children from Child Labour" early this month in Nyeri, Garissa and Kisumu respectively.

The objectives of the forum were to create awareness on the relevant laws protecting children from child labour, share experiences on the forms of child labour in Central Province and the involvement of orphans and vulnerable children in the vice.

Participants at the debates noted that the situation of child labour is on the increase despite the presence of laws that protect children from this practice. The situation is worsened by the escalating number of orphaned and vulnerable children most of who live in child headed homes. It was noted that children engaging in child labour are also subjected to other forms of abuse such sexual and physical abuse.
