PETITION: Cyprus to ratify the Lanzarote Convention for the protection of children against sexual exploitation and sexual abuse

Summary: HFC “Hope For Children” UNCRC Policy Center is encouraging citizens of Cyprus to sign their petition urging the government to ratify the Council of Europe's Convention on the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse (Lanzarote Convention), which was signed on 25th October 2007 by the Republic of Cyprus.

A member state can indicate its support for the convention by signing it, but it is only by ratifying the convention that a country takes on the obligation to protect its content by law. Cyprus has not yet ratified the Lanzarote Convention, and it is of the utmost importance that it does so, to rise to EU standards in protecting the rights of all of its citizens. Sexual exploitation is an awful and traumatic experience and its victims suffer in silence. It is the duty of the Republic of Cyprus government to put a stop to it, and the first step is to ratify the Lanzarote Convention.
