Summary: Update from youth participants Harry, Paul, Ioana and Britt from the second day of the Children and Young People's Consultation on Violence, which is taking in place in New York from 23 - 26 May 2006.
This morning was very exciting for all of us, since we visited the United Nations building! While we were there, we presented the study and youth perspective at the United Nations Division of Public Information (DPI) meeting with non-governmental organizations (NGOs). There, NGOs were very friendly to the study and what we, as youth, had to say about their role in aiding ending violence against children. After the presentation, there was a very interesting exchange between the adults and youth. The adults asked some difficult questions about violence and how they had been included in the study. When we returned to UNICEF House, we debriefed the meeting, revised the agenda for the day and had comments from the previous day. Overall, the comments suggested that the meeting was going quite well, except that there is never enough time to talk about everything that we want to talk about! In October, the violence study will have a world-wide launch in New York. There are four parts to this launch: -1. Official presentation to the General Assembly -2. Launch of child friendly materials -3. Roundtable discussion between government representatives, youth, and NGOs -4. Interactive exhibition space in the United Nations We would really like to hear some of your ideas about the launch. Any sort of ideas that you have about how we should do it would be amazing! Below are some of the suggestions that we came up with: To conclude the day, we prepared a presentation for Paulo Pinhiero, the independent expert conducting the study, and Rima Salah, the Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF. We will be meeting with them tomorrow morning. And of course, we will be taking your opinions into consideration as well when we talk to them! We will be posting a document with all of the recommendations made for each of the chapters of the study when it is ready! (Hopefully this will be very soon.) Today is the last day of the New York youth consultation and so we will close up the consultation and continue our work with the study from our local communities. We finished our work on the Community recommendations and then presented our ideas on the on the Community recommendations and the juvenile justice recommendations to the group.
