[29 February 2008] - A protest has taken place in Malta over the treatment of children in conflict with the law.
The followed recent rulings where children as young as 12 were detained following court orders.
Protestors gathered in front of the courts to show their support for the rights of children and young people, said Fr Mark Montebello, director of Mid-Dlam Ghad-Dawl.
In January 2008, a 13-year-old girl was jailed and a 12-year-old boy was remanded in custody after being arraigned. The latter is presently being held at Mr Carmel Hospital Forensic Ward because no other place can accommodate children.
Graffiti and Mid-Dlam ghad-Dawl insisted that children and young people should not be locked in prison or other detention centres.
