Indonesia: Yogyakarta Earthquake

Victims of the earthquake which shook Central Java on 27 May 2006 early in the morning still need urgent assistance. Most of the victims are in Bantul Regency and Klaten Regency. Yogyakarta is governed by Prince Hamengkubuwono IX. In this area only 163 people were killed and 283 injured. The fact that the Prince lives there and has meant that the media has focused disproportionately in this part and that aid distribution has been concentrated in this area, whilst the needs of others in more remote parts who are severely affected by the quake are going unnoticed.
