Summary: DisAble Development Force (DDF) is a concept
of volunteerism. This has emerged out of the
experience while working for the development
of disables in the past. The disables in the
rural areas are uncared for and the
professional sector is yet to reach them.

The Orientation Program of the Volunteers of disAbles Development Force
(DDF) was held on 18th & 19th October, 2004 at RARE’s Relief Institution
for the Mentally Retarded, Sonepur. A total of 23 participants attended the
residential program.

On the 18th of October Sri Gadadhara Mohapatra, OAS, District Project
Coordinator, District Primary Education Programme (DPEP), Sonepur
inaugurated the programme. Joint Secretary Sri Ambuj Bihari Satapathy
precisely spoke about the developmental activities on disAbles done by
RARE and the relevance of DDF. Chief Guest of the Occasion Sri Mohapatra
appreciated the steps of RARE for the cause of disAbles and encouraged
the volunteers to work for them.

A technical session was run by Sri Ghasiram panda, where a discussion on
the “Need of DDF and the Role of Volunteers” and the problems faced by
the disAbles in Individual, Home, Community and Society level was held.
Resource persons from RARE’s Relief Institution for the Mentally Retarded
also oriented the participants on issues relating to Identification,
Precautionary measures and Rehabilitation Process.

On the 19th of October issues discussed ranged from the Skill of
Volunteers and Voluntarism to the the facilities provided by the DPEP/SSA
to the disAbles with the volunteers. Participants were also taken through a
session on the Rights, Concessions and Schemes available for the disAbles
including the RCI Act, PWD Act and National Trust Act.
