India: Working Group on Child Labour

 

In the context of the Eleventh Five Year Plan, the Government of India, Planning Commission (Labour, Employment and Manpower Division) has constituted a Working Group on Child Labour.

Noted child right activist Mr. Shamshad Khan, Secretary, Centre for Rural Education and Development Action (CREDA) has been taken as one of the members in the Working Group. There are only two members from NGOs from India. The Working Group will discuss various issues concerning child labour, relevant Acts concerning child labour and review the existing programmes for rehabilitation of child labour and achievements in the Tenth Five Year Plan and suggest measures in dealing with hazardous and other forms of child labour.

CREDA is member of Child Right Information Network (CRIN). The Working Group constituted by Government of India will be chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. A Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Labour Secretaries/Principal Secretaries of Governments of Gujarat, Karnatika, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh states, Adviser (LEM) Planning commission, Joint Secretary (Child Labour), Ministry of Labour, Government of India and two NGO representatives as non-official members i.e. Mr. Shamshad Khan of CREDA and Mrs. Shantha Sinha of M.V. Foundation. Mr. Shamshad Khan said that on the basis of his long experience for the cause of child labour, he will share his thoughts and experiences, which can help child labourers in the future plan.
