INDIA: Report on Workshop on Legal Guardianship (1 September 2005)

August, 2005.

Research Academy for Rural Enrichment (RARE), Sonepur organized an one
day workshop on Legal Guardianship for the Parents of Mentally Retarded
at the Meeting Hall, Sonepur Block Office on 28th August 2005.

In the inaugural session Sri Chandra Nath Dani, Member in Charge of
Training, workshop and Seminar of RARE welcomed all the guests and
participants. Sri Gourishyam Panda, General Secretary of RARE gave a brief
keynote address about the need for the programme, Sri Ambuj Bihari
Satpathy, Joint Secretary discussed details about the programme of RARE
for the Rights and Benefits of the disabled. The inaugural session ended
with a vote of thanks to the chairs by Sri Suresh Sandha, Member in charge
of Complaint and Guidence Bueru.

In the technical session Sri Ghasiram Panda, Joint Secretary discuss details
about what legal guardianship is, the need for legal guardianship, who can
be a guardian, the procedure of appointment of legal guardianship, the
role of LLC, the withdrawal procedure etc. The mentally retarded and their
parents from all over the district attended the workshop. At the end of the
programme with the assistance of the staffs of RARE's Relief Institution for
the Mentally Retarded, Sonepur 8 parents applied for Legal Guardianship
on the spot.
