PEACE TRUST’S OBJECTIVE TO MAKE ‘CHILD LABOR FREE HOTELS AND TEA
STALLS’ IN CHENNAI

THE BACK GROUND AND THE DIRECT INTERVENTION OF PEACE TRUST

Depite several attempts by the Indian Government to produce statistics
on children involved in child labour, there is no reliable data on this
problem. Different agencies quote statistics which vary from a minimum of
17 million (Government’s figures) to 165 million children involved in child
labour across the nation.

The hotel industry which comprises many small eateries, restaurants, tea
shops has been cited as one of the major promoters of child labour. Run
away children and migrant children find easy access to hotel work due to
the high demand for work force in this industry.Unfortunately the hotel
industry has continued to get away with its actions which is the reason
why Peace Trust has come out to condemn such actions against children.

To effectively carry out it Campaign against Child Labour, Peace Trust has
formed an eight member group called Volunteer Vigilance Force whose
primary role is to identify child laborers in hotels, tea stalls etc.Since its
formation, the force has been able to identify 147 child laborers in 45
hotels and tea stalls .
