INDIA: Delhi Police suspends police officers after report on child brutality in 'secret jail'

[10 July 2013] -

Following an Aaj Tak report on police brutality, the Delhi Police on Wednesday suspended the station house officer (SHO) of Vijay Vihar police station along with an investigating officer (IO) and four other personnel.

The city police also said that an officer of additional deputy commissioner was probing the matter.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) chairman told Headlines Today that he has asked two members of the panel to conduct an enquiry into the matter.

Aaj Tak had on Tuesday reported how some policemen maintained a secret makeshift prison where they would run the show as they see fit. Several minors and adults were allegedly confined to this hell-hole illegally. They were allegedly tortured and sodomised in the custody.

The inhuman face of Delhi Police came to light after a photograph of the "illegal lock-up" was leaked by a policeman to Aaj Tak. According to him, the accused were kept illegally in the building and tortured by lower level policemen. Moreover, all this happened in the knowledge of senior police officers, including the SHO of Vijay Vihar.
