Human Rights Council held dialogue with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for children and armed conflict

On 15 September Radhika Coomaraswamy, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for children and armed conflict presented her annual report to the Council. The Statement made by the SRSG can be found here. The summary of the SRSG annual report is available here.

According to the UN press release, in the interactive dialogue with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, Radhika Coomaraswamy, most speakers agreed that the key for improved protection of children in armed conflict was in ending the impunity for grave violations committed against children. Among principal challenges was the implementation of normative standards for protection of children in armed conflicts. Several speakers raised the issue of the specific vulnerabilities of the girl child and the need for comprehensive protection measures. A specific challenge for the international community was reintegration and rehabilitation of child soldiers, as it required resources to be committed for the long term. In order to improve the situation of children in armed conflict, normative progress made on the international level should be implemented at the local level and a permanent and strengthened commitment by the international community was essential in this regard.
