[13 September 2007] - The Georgetown Legal Aid Clinic has started a 12 month pilot project to provide legal aid services directly to children (0-18). The project has been launched under an agreement with the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport with UNICEF funding for the first year and the possibility of ongoing government support for subsequent years. Any child needing legal help (with a criminal and/or civil matter) can call (225 6896) or go into the Clinic during working hours. (The Ministry is in the process of setting up a child helpline, which will hopefully be a 24 hour one.) The service is completely free. It is the first of its kind in Guyana, and possibly the Caribbean. The website of the Georgetown Legalaid clinic is http://www.legalaid.org.gy
