Member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child since 2013, Vice- chairperson of the Committee and Member of the Working Group on the 3rd Optional protocol on a communication procedures. Also Member of the Arab Committee on the Rights of the Child, League of Arab States.

Main professional activities

Undertaken a range of child rights related roles in Bahrain and internationally, working on drafting a number of General Comments, managing national child and youth strategies and drafting national legislation related to children.

Why do you want to serve on the CRC?

I am standing for re-election to continue the work I started in the Committee in 2013. During the past three years, I have been in a position to influence governments to do more for children. I have gained a lot of experience, which I will utilise to work closely with policy makers in States party to ensure that the children enjoy their rights. I also wish to continue work to developing two General Comments: Children in Street Situation and Children in a migration situation (jointly with CMW), and in the WG following up the implementation of the OPIC.

What do you see as important emerging child rights issues that you believe the Committee should be addressing?

There are three issues the Committee has to focus on: 1- the protection of the huge number of refugee children, with more attention on the two optional protocols. 2- the current economic crisis and the impact of austerity measures on the realisation of children’s rights, and the obligation of States to establish a tracking system for the allocation and use of resources for children. 3- vigorously encourage States to ratifiy the OPIC. It will not only provide the children with a complain mechanism, but will encourage States to review their national legislation and implementating mechanisims to protect children’s rights.
