CHILDREN AND TELECOMS: Get help over the phone

Did you get bad marks on a test or an exam and don’t know how to tell your parents?

Is there an adult who touches you in a way that makes you uncomfortable and you don’t know how to tell someone?

Did you know that child helplines answer thousands of calls every year from kids just like yourself? There are lots of reasons why children and young people call. It can be because of a specific problem or just because they need someone to talk to.

The good news is that help is always just a telephone call away. The world is a smaller place than it was a few years ago and it is now much easier to contact people that are far away or even on the other side of the world. This is very important for children like you, all over the world, who can get help when they can get to a telephone.

On May 17th, 2007 children around the world will celebrate how they can use telephones, their computers radio programmes and television to get help. We are celebrating that you and every other child is never alone and that one day the world will be a better place for everyone.

An important part of May 17th will be to celebrate children like you, using these different forms of communication so that you can grow up with information and knowledge about your rights.

There is an international organization called Child Helpline International. They have members like in every country in the world. They use different ways to reach children who may not even have a telephone at home. All of these helplines and the children in their countries will be celebrating this day along with us.
