Children and Adolescents Statement: Strategies for international cooperation

Summary: Children and adolescents statements at thematic panels
During World Congress III, 25-28 November 2008, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This statement was delivered during the panel on Strategies for international cooperation.

Panel 5
Theme 5: Strategies for international cooperation

We are here representing children and adolescents from the whole world, contributing to the process of fighting and increasing awareness on sexual exploitation of children and adolescents. This is a big problem that is growing in recent years.

It is the first time that 300 children and adolescents are coming together to talk about and decide what measures and actions to take to end sexual exploitation of children and adolescents. We urgently need the governments to join us in our decisions. We ask for their commitment today, in their countries to accept the decisions children have made here and follow up on them.

With regard to ‘governments and inter-governmental cooperation’, we want the following:

1. Countries to adopt and implement bilateral and multilateral agreements and ensure regular monitoring in order to strengthen cross border law enforcement to stop trafficking and to protect the rights of all migrants.

2. Governments and donors to commit more resources to strengthen and expand children’s regional network and actions against sexual exploitation of children and adolescents and to develop campaigns, plans, programmes, strategies and policies.

3. The governments should meet at least once a year at the regional level to discuss the issue of sexual exploitation of children and adolescents and develop common strategies and measurable and time bound goals by involving organised children and youth to strengthen and broaden local mobilization.

We are children, but we think we can change the world. Imagine a world without sexual exploitation! We need to come together as a team – adults, children and adolescents, governments and NGOs – to fight sexual exploitation of children and adolescents because we believe the future of the world is in our hands.

For us to act, we need your support! We need to be heard!
