Children and Adolescents Statement: Role of the private sector and corporate social responsibility

Summary: Children and adolescents statements at thematic panels
During World Congress III, 25-28 November 2008, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This statement was delivered during the panel on Role of the private sector and corporate social responsibility.

Panel 4
Theme 4: Role of the private sector and corporate social responsibility

The role of the internet, media and tourism is very important to stop sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.

The internet must educate and protect children and adolescents through filtering programmes. There must be ways to report exploitation on the internet.

Media has the responsibility to teach children how to protect themselves from sexual exploitation through the mass media like children’s magazines, comics, drama, TV programmes. The media should promote positive aspects of business corporations, with help from NGOs.

With regard to tourism, we should fight this problem together with hotels, airports, trains and ports. We should present informative material on sexual exploitation, through specific phone lines and confidential websites, in every country.

We hope that these solutions will help to stop sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.
