[BAKU, 4 March 2011] - Azerbaijani MPs made proposals to strengthen measures to protect children's rights at a parliamentary session on Friday. "The complaints of children and women to law enforcement agencies conflict with the mentality of the Azerbaijani people. This is wrong," MP Gular Akhmedova said. She said a recent case when parents killed their child demonstrates that children's rights must be protected. Akhmedova proposed that the Interior Ministry and Ombudsman add a button for emergency calls on mobile phones. Enough laws have been adopted for human rights, MP Fazil Mustafa said. He added, however, there are too few enforcement mechanisms and the state should give priority to children's rights. The criminal code should toughen the punishment for premeditated murder. The murderer of a young child must get a life sentence, MP Tahir Rzayev said. A five-year-old child died after his parents beat him cruelly in Baku a few days ago. Further Information:
