African Journalists launch network to protect children’s rights

[25 May, 2005, BAMAKO] - Most of the 40 journalists that were invited by
UNICEF to participate in the West and Central African Regional
Consultation for the UN Study on Violence against children today
announced the creation of a regional network of journalists to bring their
contributions to the promotion of the rights of the child and their
protection in West and Central Africa.

This regional network will deal with all aspects related to child rights and
will increase the efforts already made at national levels in a variety of
networks. The network will work in partnership with UN agencies
intervening in child protection issues and more specifically UNICEF as well
as specialised NGOs in this area.

The network proposes to alert its members on all abuses perpetrated
against children, to sensitise the public and alert more and more
journalists to the question of the rights of the child.

The website will be launched in the near future at the following web
address: www.apcr.org , African Press for Children’s Rights, (Presse
Africaine pour la protection des droits de l’enfant)
