AFRICA: Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman to raise funds for UNICEF

[16 August 2007] - During their latest epic motorbike adventure, Long Way Down, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman teamed up with Buffera Ltd to produce a customised High UV Protection Buff® to help raise money for their charity partner UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.

The new product is on sale across the UK in Cotswold Outdoor high street shops and online at www.longwaydown.com and www.buffwear.co.uk. All profits from sales will go towards projects providing vital support and care for children affected by HIV, conflict and poverty all over Africa.

The Long Way Down began in John O’Groats in Scotland in May 2007 from where Ewan and Charley rode across Europe and the African continent down to Cape Town in August 2007. They rode through jungles, across deserts, through rural countryside and urban landscapes and visited three UNICEF supported projects along the way, in Ethiopia, Uganda and Malawi where they saw first hand issues facing children and what UNICEF is doing to help.

Ewan McGregor, who is an Ambassador for the world’s leading children’s organisation UNICEF, said: “It’s amazing for us to be able to go into communities and learn about people’s lives and of course it is a way of doing what we can to raise awareness about the lives of children in Africa. We want to raise a lot of money too, via fundraising parties and on our website. We’re now selling a Buff from which the profits go to UNICEF. It’s a great bit of biking or outdoors clothing that can be worn as a scarf or head band or wrist band, so I am hoping people will buy one.”

Charley said, “People ask us about our travels and what stands out the most. For both of us, its the incredible, tireless work of UNICEF’s local staff on the ground, working to give children the care and support they need to survive. Day in day out, UNICEF is taking action, preventing babies being born with HIV, helping children orphaned by AIDS, giving kids a chance to go to school. There’s so much to do, but without any funding from the UN, they need money urgently to reach every child. So please, dig deep in your pockets and give something - however much it is - to help UNICEF make the world a better place for children. We’ve seen what a difference it can make.”

The new product is available via Cotswold camping shops, at www.buffwear.co.uk and at www.longwaydown.com. All profits from the sales of this new product will go towards projects providing vital support and care for children affected by HIV, conflict and poverty all over Africa.
