* Burkina: entrepreneurship training

From 25th to 30th January, 7 WCYs (3 girls and 4 boys) from Tougan, participated in an entrepreneurship training organized by the Youth and Employment Ministry. The purpose of this program is to train 500 youths in the entrepreneurship sector and to support them financially. At the end of the training, the participants received a certificate.

* Cameroun: National Youth Day celebration
The AWCYs of Cameroun celebrated each in their own way the Youth Day from 9th to 11th February 2010. Most of them organized football for the boys, handball for the girls, debates animated by WCYs and other experts, animation (dance, theatre forum, sketch, poem, etc.). The AWCY Yaoundé commemorated the 9th at the Rene Graffin Institute. The activities of the WCYs were supported by the Sœur Supérieure, who offered its loudspeaker system for free as well as other logistic material (PA system, drums, tambours, balafone, footballs…). The event started with a ballet by WCY members of the Essos theatre group, followed by animation and a debate animated by WCYs about: “the daily life of WCYs of Cameroun”. Then the group did a representation called “Red Ball”, taken from a comic book published by Plan, which insists on the right to rest and the right to play. In Akonolinga, the week was also rich in activities for the AWCY. Amongst other activities there was a clean-up session in the city center, a traditional dance competition, an exhibition of regional food produce and objects of art. The activities finished with a round table on the 11th of February.

* Côte d’Ivoire: new branch for AWCY Bonoua, training about HIV/Aids, fight against violence towards children

- AWCY Bonoua received the keys of its new office by Mr Bohi N'Guessan Faustin, first judge of the above mentioned community. He felt proud and honored to be able to hand over the new premises to the WCYs of his community. The key handover ceremony took place in the Bonoua city hall in presence of the city’s WCYs, the city hall staff and the Communal Youth Union. The former AWCY office building serves today as a library, thanks to the funding of the UNOCI.

- 25 WCYs who came from the AWCY Touba grassroots groups participated in a training session about HIV/Aids amongst youths and adolescents which had as a goal to inform the children and youths about the illness and to train up youth worker pairs who could run awareness sessions amongst other children and youths. - From 9th to 10th January 2010, AWCY Toumodi in cooperation with Radio N'zassa organized an activity about violence towards children, in particular young girls. This activity took place in two phases: first a city march followed by debates and testimonies of some children who experienced violence. The second phase is a football tournament which gathered authorities and WCYs of the city as well as radio officers in the Toumodi municipal stadium in the presence of the Juvenile Court Judge, who came from Abidjan. This was followed by a radio transmission with several professionals like the WCYs and the NGOs presented.

* Ethiopia: strengthening the links between associations
Thanks to the financial support of the AMWCY, AWCY Adis strengthened their links with the structure for the participation of children from the Chenha neighborhood. With the program initiated in this neighborhood, the lead children of the structure got to know the rights of the WCYs, shared their experience of the Movement regarding child labor and exploitation, developed a joint plan and strengthened the links between two structures. 51 participants benefited from that program. Parallel to that training, the musical group MCDP and the theater group of the structure presented a program of educational games and shared their experiences with the population of the communities of Doko and Ezo Kebeles in form of questions and answers. In total 600 members of the community were made aware of child labor and exploitation and the 12 rights of the WCYs through games and testimonies of the children.

* Gambia: fundraising concert with a Senegalese artist
On 22nd and 23rd February 2010, AWCY Bara in collaboration with AWCY Farafenni, organized a concert with Abou Thioubalo, a Senegalese artist. The concert had as topic: “Stop violence towards children and promote child education”. With this event, AWCY Bara raised some funds that will be useful in supporting the new AWCYS of Brikama and Farafenni in the development of their activities. The artist played one night in Barra and the other night in Farafenni events that made visible and the AWCY and their activities amongst the Gambian communities in general.

* Guinea Bissau: participation in the national carnival, awareness session about HIV/Aids

- Bafata and Gabu: from 13th to 16th February 2010, more than 500 WCYs of those two cities participated in a national parade organized by the Regional Sports, Culture and Leisure Management. In order to leave their mark in this great cultural event, they marched through the streets, sending out messages to make people aware of the children’s rights. Dancing, singing and banners - reflecting the daily life of WCYs were on the menu throughout the 4 days of the carnival.

- Mansoa: the AWCY organized a week long house to house activity to make the population aware about HIV/Aids prevention with the support of “Aids Service”, the risks of contamination and its consequences. At the end of each session, the AWCY proceeded to distribute condoms free of charge.

* Togo: awareness sessions about work accidents and public goods management
In certain villages of the city of Niamtougo, the WCYs did a census on apprentices between the age of 12 and 18. They talked with them about their duties and rights and what kind of behavior to adopt in the workshops in order to avoid work accidents, to gain the respect of the environment and also about the duties of their employers towards them. Those meetings resulted in the creation of the apprentices group made up of 47 members. In the localities around the city, the WCYs did an awareness session about the management of public goods. Through these citizen actions, they had a project with the city deputy to install public urinals at the big market of Niamtougou and an IGAs training session is in negotiation with the latter.

* Zimbabwe: assessment meeting and training about rights
From 21st to 24th January 2009, the AWCY of Mashonaland Central hosted an assessment and training meeting. 37 children and 3 adults of the Ministry of Education and Justice participated. The purposes of this meeting were mainly: the follow up and assessment of the process of the organized children’s project and the establishing of an AWCY action plan 2010, training about rights - in putting emphasis on documentation, the leadership and the project planning. The participants visited the Provincial Resource Centre of Mvurwi. Most of the children having access to this centre, developed self confidence and are able to clearly express questions during the children’s activities. The activities within the AWCY work well and more than 300 children benefited from them since the beginning of the year. The training strengthened the members in the accomplishing of their activities and created a positive impact on the life of the children.

Publication: WCYs’ challenges no. 10 and their poster
The annual bulletin of the AMWCY: “WCYs’ challenges nr. 10” and their poster: “Finale declaration of the Cotonou meeting” was published recently. This 10th edition highlighted the actions of the WCYs at all levels in their respective countries and at international level. Additionally focus is made on strong moments and the results issuing from the 8th General Assembly of the Movement as well as illustrations of their actions through comic strips, photos etc.
