European Forum on the Rights of the Child

On 4 July 2006, the Commission adopted a communication entitled « Towards an EU strategy on the rights of the child ». It includes a list of actions, aimed at the promotion and protection of the rights of the child in Europe, including the establishment of a permanent “European Forum on the Rights of the Child.

This Forum will strengthen cooperation among the main stakeholders (including the Member States, Ombudspersons for children, UNICEF, the Council of Europe and civil society) making optimal use of existing networks and international organisations or bodies involved in children’s rights and will act as an arena for exchange of good practice.

In partnership with the German Presidency of the European Union, the Commission decided to launch the Forum, which will thereafter meet at regular intervals, on 4 June 2007 in Berlin.

The first meeting will be focused on the role of the Justice system. The morning session will be dedicated to the official political launch of the Forum in the presence of the Ministers for Justice. In the afternoon, two parallel sessions will be held, one on the setting up of the European Forum in terms of agreeing on objectives and ways to achieve them, and another on sexual crimes and Internet.
