UN COMMITTEE ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD: 46th Session [event]
The 46th Session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child will be held from 17 September to 5 October 2007 at the Palais Wilson in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Committee will review Venezuela's report on its implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Sierra Leone's report was also scheduled for examination during this session, but this has been postponed as a result of the current situation in the run-up to the national elections.
In addition, the Committee will review reports on the implementation of the Optional Protocol on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography (OPSC) from Bulgaria, France and Spain and reports on the Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict (OPAC) for Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Qatar, Spain and Syrian Arab Republic.
A special CRC news page devoted to the activities of the Committee on the Rights of the Child has been set up on the CRIN website in partnership with the NGO Group for the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The page provides summaries of the Committee sessions by country, UN press releases, NGO press releases, information about the Day of General Discussion, Decisions, General Comments and other activities of the Committee.
States Parties reports submitted by governments to the Committee on the Rights of the Child are available in English, French and Spanish on the website of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Word and PDF formats.
Alternative Reports submitted by NGOs to the Committee on the Rights of the Child are made available on the CRIN website in partnership with the NGO Group for the Convention on the Rights of the Child. On Wednesday, 19th September, the Committee was due to examine Sierra Leone’s Second Report. This has now been cancelled as a result of the current situation in the run-up to the country's elections.

On Monday, 24th September, the Committee will examine the reports submitted by Bulgaria under article 12 (1) of the Optional Protocol on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography (CRC/C/OPAC/BGR/1), and article 8 (1) of the Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict (CRC/C/OPAC/BGR/1).

GENERAL ASSEMBLY: Report on the Status of the Convention on the Rights of the Child [report]
This year's Report of the Secretary-General on the Status of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, is now available. The report has been submitted to the Third Committee of the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly, which will open on 18 September 2007.
The work of the General Assembly is conducted in the plenary and the six main Committees. The Third Committee deals with children's rights and human rights in general.
Other reports which will be made available shortly for this session include the Report of the Secretary-General on the Girl Child and the Report of the Independent Expert for the United Nations Study on Violence against Children.
The General Assembly, by its Resolution 44/25 of 20 November 1989, adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention was opened for signature in New York on 26 January 1990 and entered into force on 2 September 1990, the thirtieth day after the deposit with the Secretary-General of the twentieth instrument of ratification or accession. As at 30 June 2007, the Convention had been ratified or acceded to by 193 States.
By its Resolution 54/263 of 25 May 2000, the Assembly adopted two Optional Protocols to the Convention. The Optional Protocols entered into force on 12 February and 18 January 2002, respectively. As at 30 June 2007, the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the involvement of children in armed conflict had been ratified by 116 States and signed by 122 States and the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography had been ratified by 121 States and signed by 115 States.

DAY OF GENERAL DISCUSSION 2007: Resources for the Rights of the Child - The Responsibility of States [event]
The theme of the Committee on the Rights of the Child's next Day of General Discussion (DGD) will be "Resources for the Rights of the Child - Responsibility of States", Investments for the Implementation of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of Children and International Cooperation (CRC article 4). The meeting will take place at the Palais Wilson in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, 21 September 2007.
The aim of the Days of General Discussion is to foster a deeper understanding of the contents and implications of specific articles or topics of the Convention. Following the discussion the Committee adopts recommendations on how States Parties and others can better implement these aspects of the Convention.
As the theme of this year's meeting is broad, participants will be divided into two groups:
The deadlines for NGO and individual submissions as well as for attendance at the event are now closed. However, submissions are made publicly available on the CRIN website in cooperation with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) here.

COSTA RICA: Report on Concluding Observations follow- up workshop [report]
A workshop was held from 30 October to 1 November 2006 in San José, Costa Rica, to follow up the Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on common issues affecting the region. The report from this meeting is now available here (in Spanish only).
Participants in the workshop included representatives from governments, national institutions and journalists from the following ten countries: Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
Issues of addressed in the workshop included: adoption, violence against children and juvenile justice. The participants adopted a series of thematic recommendations on violence, juvenile justice, health, economic and sexual exploitation, education and child rights monitoring. These recommendations aim to strengthen governments’ capacity to implement the recommendations made by the Committee on the Rights of the Child and promote follow up by all stakeholders at the national level.
Participants emphasised governments’ obligation to establish a national system to produce reliable, disaggregated information on progress made in implementing all the articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The workshop was jointly organised by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Plan International, the Patronato Nacional (National Children’s Board), and UNICEF.
