CRC Elections 2010: The candidates – who's who (Part 2)
In three months' time, UN Member States will gather at the UN General Assembly in New York to elect nine people to the most important children's rights organisation in the world: the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.Those selected will replace outgoing members of the 18-strong Committee whose terms expire on 28 February 2011.
Two weeks ago, CRIN published the first set of candidate interviews. This week, a further seven interviews have been published.

Recent Ratifications
Zambia signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, while the Central African Republic (CAR) signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict.
The Central African Republic also signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.
Eleven new countries have added their names to a growing United Nations-backed initiative - the Paris Commitments - to halt child recruitment, support the release of children from armed groups and help reintegrate them into civilian life. To read the story, click here

Are children being involved in European and international decision-making?
The Children's Rights Alliance for England is carrying out a research project looking at the extent of children's involvement in European and international decision-making. This project is being carried out with partners in Austria, Estonia, Ireland, the Republic of Moldova, Romania and Russia.
The survey seeks to find out how European NGOs support children (those aged 17 and under) to engage in decision-making processes at European and international level. CRAE hopes the research will pull together a picture of how children can effect change across Europe and inform recommendations to the European Commission on achieving the effective engagement of children in decision-making.
CRAE is running a consultation event for children and young people in London on Saturday 20 November.

Right to Information
In light of Right to Know Day, which was held on 28 September 2010, ARTICLE 19 have launched the Global RTI Index, a new tool to compare and contrast right to information laws, highlighting weaknesses and best practices.
The Global RTI Index will assist in the evaluation of right to information laws across the globe in order to identify and better understand their structural strengths and weaknesses. It will offer advocates and policy makers at all levels the ability to compare legal provisions between countries and examine experiences to see what works best.

Mexico: Government's failure to prevent gender violence
The case of an indigenous maya girl from a rural community in Mexico highlights the government's failures in dealing with violence against girls, a phenomenon that is overlooked due to the many other types of violence plaguing Mexico, such as the epidemic of drug-related murders, and the human rights violations attributed to the military and police. Hershey linked to child labour
NGOs and human rights groups have accused Hershey of sourcing cocoa from African farms that use forced and child labour in wide-ranging criticism of the US chocolate giant's record on corporate and social responsibility. A report from Global Exchange, Green America, the International Labor Rights Forum (ILRF) and Oasis USA said that Hershey had not ensured its cocoa supplies from west Africa were not from areas "tainted" by labour rights abuses. (IPS)
