The Office is tasked with investigating administrative malpractice as well as alleged contraventions of the Declaration of Rights by members of the defence forces, police, government departments and the prison service. The body is empowered to investigate alleged violations of children's rights, but its functioning has not been reviewed by the Committee on the Rights of the Child since 1996.
