Summary: A review of the current situation in Somalia concerning children, with a special focus on health, security and political developments in the face of the recent droughts and unrest.
The UNICEF Somalia Monthly Review is a monthly bulletin produced by UNICEF Somalia to inform the media, other UN agencies, international and local NGOs, the general public in and out of Somalia and people with a special interest in UNICEF and Somalia on the latest developments in UNICEF's work and the general situation in the country. It covers activities as compiled by UNICEF field staff in Somalia in the month under review. The UNICEF programmes covered are: Health and Nutrition, Water and Environmental Sanitation, Education, HIV/AIDS, Child Protection, Youth Development and Participation and Communication for Development. The Review also contains an update of Political Developments and the Security situation. The Review is compiled by UNICEF staff based in Hargeisa, Northwest Somalia ('Somaliland'), Bossaso, Northeast Somalia ('Puntland') and the UNICEF offices in Jowhar, Mogadishu, Baidoa and Kismayo in Central and Southern Somalia. In the September 2006 UNICEF Somalia Monthly Review, the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) takes control of the southern port-town of Kismayo. Despite differing, both the UIC and the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) say they are willing to engage in dialogue.
