UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL: Report of the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar

This report sets out the findings of the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, in a recent mission following a State crackdown on peaceful demonstrators. During this period (26 - 29 September 2007), civilians - including children - where killed, beaten and tortured.

The Human Rights Council, which is currently in session, is debating a resolution tabled by Portugal. The aim of the reolution would be to allow the Special Rapporteur to continue his task and should therefore refrain from using 'condemnatory language'.

The resolution would call on the government of Myanmar to respect human rights standards, engage in national dialogue, and reiterate the Rapporteur's recommendations. It would also invite the Rapporteur to make a follow-up visit.
