THAILAND: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Thailand that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has a basis in article 257 of the Constitution of Thailand, which outlines its powers and duties. In its 2011 report to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, the Government stated that the NHRC was operational and accessible to children. Nevertheless, the Committee noted that the NHRC provided only limited access to children and few opportunities to make complaints. The Committee recommended that the State take steps to improve awareness of the NHRC and establish a special unit for children able to better address violations of children's rights. The Committee further recommended that the development of regional offices for the NHRC so as to strengthen the organisation's work throughout the State.
