The report is based on an assessment in Southern Sudan in June 2010 to identify young women and men's skills-building needs, challenges and opportunities; extract lessons learned from existing training programmes; and document current and emerging demand for skills in the Southern Sudanese labour market. The assessment sought to establish how vocational training and alternative education programmes could be designed to better suit the demands of the Southern Sudanese economy and accommodate the specific needs of different sub-groups of youth. The intended audience for this report is donors, policy makers and field practitioners. The goal is to promote greater attention to context-appropriate, market-driven educational and skills-building programmes for young women and men. While the report focuses on Southern Sudan, it will also be useful for humanitarian action in future complex emergencies and situations of post-conflict reconstruction. This field assessment was part of the Women's Refugee Commission's global research and advocacy project that aims to increase the scope, scale and effectiveness of educational and job training programmes for displaced, conflict-affected young people aged 15-24 years.
