Speaking for Themselves

Summary: Child Wise has undertaken research that gives
voice to the experiences, needs and views of
young people involved in commercial sexual
activity in Melbourne.
In Speaking for Themselves, Child Wise interviewed 30 young people
whose stories confirm the significant links between under-age sex work
and risk factors such as homelessness, disrupted and abusive
backgrounds, drug addiction and exposure to violence. These factors
combine to create a cycle of high-risk activities.

Speaking for Themselves also highlights the dangers of sex-working for
those under the age of 18. Not only are they young, but they indicated
they are reluctant to use welfare services because they fear being placed
into the state care system.

This report by Child Wise aims to assist government and non-government
organisations to develop more appropriate intervention strategies and to
improve services for young people.Owner: Child Wisepdf: www.childwise.net/order_publications/index.html
