SOUTH SUDAN: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in South Sudan that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudspersons

Section 193 of the Child Act 2008 established the Independent Child Commission. The mandate of the Commission includes:

  • investigating violations of the rights of the child in response to a complaint or of the Commission's volition;
  • visiting reformatories and places of detention with a view to inspecting the conditions of children and making recommendations to the relevant authority;
  • establishing and continuing research, education and information to enhance the respect for children's rights;
  • recommending measures to promote children's rights to the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly;
  • creating and sustaining an awareness of the Child Act within South Sudan
  • monitoring the compliance of the Government with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child; and
  • expressing an opinion or presenting advice to Government organs on any issue related to children's rights

It should be noted that the Child Act was enacted while Southern Sudan was part of Sudan, and so was a party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. South Sudan is yet to ratify the Convention since it has become an independent State.
