SOUTH AFRICA: Launch of report on school-based violence

The SAHRC held Public Hearings on School-based Violence in the Western Cape Province during September 2006. Given the ongoing manifestation of violence in our schools, these hearings were conducted after the SAHRC received numerous complaints regarding school-based violence, which impedes on the rights of learners and educators to work in a safe and violence-free environment.

The objectives of the Public Hearings were to further explore the nature, extent and impact of school-based violence on the enjoyment of the right to basic education. In our view, the report together with the recommendations made in it, provide a basis to properly contextualise and understand the complexity of the problem as well as offering a comprehensive and inclusive response to it.
