Summary: On 22 December 2003, the General Assembly of the United Nations requested the Secretary-General to conduct an in-depth study on all forms of violence against women (resolution 58/185).
The study is expected to provide: The study will also propose action-oriented recommendations, including on effective remedies and prevention and rehabilitation measures. Forms and manifestations of violence against women that will be considered in the study are identified in a number of documents, including the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly entitled “Women 2000: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century”, as well as relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Commission on Human Rights. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and general recommendation 19 of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women will also guide the study.
