NEPAL: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Nepal that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudspersons

The Nepalese National Human Rights Commission has a dedicated Child Rights Desk, and the National Commission on Women and the District Child Welfare Boards both have a role in promoting children's rights. In 2005, however, the Committee on the Rights of the Child expressed concerns about the accessibility and availability of these institutions, the limited mandate of the Child Rights Desk, and the small proportion of District Child Welfare Boards that were active. As such, the Committee urged Nepal to extend the mandate of the Child Rights Desk to allow it to address individual complaints from children and to increase awareness-raising in order to promote the use of the mechanism by children.
