MAURITANIA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Mauritania that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established in 2006 under Order No. 2006-015 of 12 July 2006, and has a unit that specialises in children's rights. The Committee on the Rights of the Child, however, has expressed its concern that the body has insufficient resources to carry out its functions, and that the Commission is not accessible to children. In its 2008 report to the Committee, the State indicated that the primary role of the NHRC was to act as a framework for discussing and promoting human rights issues rather than to investigate complaints.
