MALDIVES: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in the Maldives that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) was established in 2003 and its powers were strengthened by the Human Rights Commission Act in 2006. The Commission's mandate includes the capacity to receive complaints regarding human rights violations, though it has had difficulties in attaining fully independent status and in recruiting staff for certain positions. In its 2007 Concluding Observations, the Committee on the Rights of the Child recommended that the HRC ensure that its complaints mechanism is easily accessible to children and that the Commission be given full independence in accordance with the Paris Principles.
