Children's Ombudsperson

The Child Rights Unit, operating as part of the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), as well as the Children Thematic Committee, is responsible for investigating, carrying out research and providing legal advice on child rights issues. The Committee on the Rights of the Child noted the increased number of child rights cases reported to the MHRC in its 2009 Observations, and considered this demonstrative of a greater awareness of the organisation's existence and mandate. However, the Committee expressed regret at the limited human and financial resources available to the MHRC, and that its recommendations are not considered and followed up in a timely manner. The Committee recommended that the State take steps to address these concerns.
