Summary: This is a report of an IPJJ side-event on the protection of the human rights of children deprived of their liberty organised in parallel to the 21st session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (23 - 27 April 2012) by the Panel Secretariat and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It provides a summary of the presentation given by the four panellists and is followed by a brief outline of the questions from the floor and answers provided by the panellists.
The objective of this side-event was to share ideas, lessons learned and promising practices on how to protect, promote and fulfil the rights of children deprived of their liberty. It also aimed to reaffirm that deprivation of children's liberty should be used as a measure of last resort and for the shortest period of time. It was chaired by Ms. Alexandra Martins, UNODC Justice Section, and attended by around thirty participants, representing the civil society, governments, and United Nations agencies. This report provides a summary of the presentation given by the four panellists. It is followed by a brief outline of the questions from the floor and answers provided by the panellists.
