Jargon of the week: **Technical support**

This week we received a plea to look into the term "technical support". What does it actually mean? Funding? Training? Making plane reservations?

Many organisations call their IT staff the "technical support" team, but the term is also regularly used to refer to expertise of any kind. The key is to be specific about the type of expertise you are talking about.

For example:

Instead of saying you are looking for technical support for minority children, be specific and say you are "looking for policy expertise on education [for example] for minority children".

Instead of describing a department as the Technical Support Division for Child Labour, try the Child Labour Policy and Programmes Division.
