The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has released a new thematic report on corporal punishment. The report, which calls on Member States of the Organisation of American States (OAS), to abolish all forms of corporal punishment of children, recommends specific actions for making progress towards protecting children and adolescents' human rights.
The report follows a decision issued earlier this year by the The Inter-American Court of Human Rights which confirmed the human rights obligations of Member States of the Organisation of American States (OAS) to prohibit and eliminate all corporal punishment of children.
Three OAS Member States have so far prohibited all forms of corporal punishment of children: Uruguay (2007), Venezuela (2007) and Costa Rica (2008). Other States are in the process of drafting similar legislation.
