Summary: This is a report on the findings of a study into child labour in Nias, Indonesia from June – August 2006. The report outlines attitudes towards child labour and the type of work undertaken by children. The risks involved with child labour in Nias are detailed, ranging from exhaustion or bruises to death by drowning. The author discusses the causes of child labour in this region, which include poverty, the attitude that children are an asset, the need for construction work after the 2004 tsunami and 2005 earthquake, and the poor quality of education.
