GEORGIA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Georgia that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

There is a Child Rights Centre within the Georgian Office of the Public Defender with a mandate that includes the protection of the rights of children. However, the Committee on the Rights of Child expressed concern in its 2008 Concluding Observations that the Centre did not have adequate human or financial resources to fulfil its role throughout the country. The Committee also expressed concerns that the recommendations of the Child Rights Centre were not considered by Parliament in a timely fashion and that the Centre did not have unhindered access to children in State institutions. The Committee urged the State to address these faults in its child rights monitoring mechanism, and further encouraged the State to establish a procedure to address complaints of violations of children's rights.
