Committe on the Rights of the Child submits annual report to the UN General Assembly

Summary: In its resolution 65/197, the General Assembly requested the Secretary General to submit to it at its sixty-sixth session a report on the status of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, with a focus on implementing the rights of children with disabilities. The present report is submitted in accordance with that request.

Significant, urgent and coordinated action is needed to achieve the realization of the rights of children with disabilities.

The scale and severity of violations against their rights, in all regions of the world, constitute a hidden emergency.

It is necessary to remove barriers that impede the realization of the rights of children with disabilities, and recognize the importance of international cooperation for improving the living conditions of children with disabilities in every country, particularly in developing countries.

As at 1 July 2011, the Convention on the Rights of the Child had been ratified or acceded to by 193 States, and two States had signed the Convention.

As at 1 July 2011, the Optional Protocol on the involvement of children in armed conflict had been ratified by 142 States, and the Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography had been ratified by 144 States.

During the reporting period, the Committee on the Rights of the Child held its fifty-fifth to fifty-seventh sessions at the United Nations Office at Geneva, from 13 September to 1 October 2010, from 17 January to 4 February 2011 and from 30 May to 17 June 2011.
