COLOMBIA: Children's Ombudsperson

Summary: Information about institutions in Colombia that monitor children's rights.

Children's Ombudsperson

The Defensoria del Pueblo (DP) is the Colombian Ombudsperson's Office, with a unit dedicated to children's rights. Operating under the direction of the Public Prosecutor's Office, but elected by the House of Representatives, the DP is tasked with “the promotion, exercise, dissemination and defence of human rights”. While the Ombudsperson maintains offices in all 32 departments of Colombia, the Committee on the Rights of the Child has been critical of its lack of presence in rural areas of the country. The Committee has recommended that the State party take steps to provide the DP with adequate resources that would, among other things, allow it to extend representation nationwide.
