"This book came about as a result of a joint research effort between
the Community Law Centre and various NGO's . The research and
publication of the book was made possible by UNICEF South Africa. The
aim was to compile information about the living conditions of
imprisoned children but was later extended to include awaiting trial
children.

The research is based on interviews with children in more than thirty
prisons across the country. This book contains the stories of the
children about their living conditions in prisons as told by the
children themselves and the observations made by the researchers
during visits to the prison.

It provides an insight on issues like nutrition, education and
training, rehabilitation and violence and gangs"
